In Bukavu, with an estimated 830,000+ population, there is no legitimate music school that we know of. Anything else available is poorly organized and not comprehensive. Thus, FHA has a privileged platform to do something good in the area of music in Bukavu: We would like to provide the community with a music academy where children can learn music and obtain a certificate!
Several years ago, we received a guitar and a violin from some American friends in Virginia. Later we obtained a trumpet from a friend in Pennsylvania. We already had skilled guitar players and we were sure we would find someone to be a guitar instructor, but we had no one to give violin or trumpet lessons.
Now, let me introduce our dear colleague Trésor Kanyunyi.
Trésor, is a talented 24-year-old young man, who already has his high school diploma and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science—where he graduated with high-distinction.
Three years ago, GOD sent him to us to teach music to our younger students. Trésor decided to start training himself to play a variety of instruments, and now we have someone who is not only proficient on the violin and trumpet, but is able to teach others.
As of this time Trésor plays: Violin, Trumpet, Keyboards, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Recorder, and Harmonica; but more will follow. He truly has a gift from God for music and any instrument he touches!
Whenever we have a new musical instrument, Trésor is eager to learn how to play it. It is this spirit and passion that we want to encourage in him, for the benefit of the children and young people at our center.
All that Trésor has learned is self-taught, thanks to his natural musical ability, but it still remains insufficient as far as classical music and music theory in general. He has just basic knowledge to read music. However, as you can already understand Trésor has an impressive ability to learn.
Now the goal is for FHA to send Trésor to Belgium for 3 months to benefit from a Belgian Music Academy education. Our Belge partner Maryse is helping us see if we could do this early next year. We have a donor who saw and appreciated this young man’s talent and who is willing to pay for the trip. But Maryse is also looking at possible scholarships in the area. If it happens, Trésor can stay with my family in Ath or Péruwelz. So, unless something changes or we do not get the scholarship, FHA will not be asked to pay for anything in this project. Win-Win!!
He would go to school during the days and practice in the church services in Péruwelz (my brother-in-law is the pastor) in evenings and on weekends. He would learn about the methods to teach music, especially to children. When he returns to Bukavu he would help us organize our music department.
So, you see, we are one step closer to having our music academy, GOD willing. One more way that FHA can bring HOPE to Bukavu!
