When you were growing up, did you ever go to Summer School?
If not, I’m sure you understand what it is. Well, here in Bukavu, we’re teaching four summer classes this year in addition to our VBS program:
- English Class
- Introduction to Traffic Law
- Music lessons and introduction to different music instruments
- A Writing and Reading workshop
The first two classes, English class and Traffic Law class, are brand new and I’m excited to tell you more about them.
This is a first! We have seen parents who are very appreciative of the work we are doing with their children and for all they are learning with us, but we’ve never had a parent willing to volunteer with us!
Mr. Damien was an English teacher many years ago. Then, like it is with most teachers since NGOs started opening in Bukavu, he found an opportunity to work with the MONUSCO (UN special mission in Congo). He had to choose between a teaching job with lots of insecurity on one side and an Interpreter job that came with many more
He’s been there now for many years working with the UN organization in Bukavu. He
sent us his children for tutoring for a short time, but the growing teenagers did not stay with us very long. Now, because he really likes what we are doing, he decided he’d offer to participate with us in caring for our children this summer.
He is teaching a beginner’s English class to 42 children for two weeks!
Thanks, Monsieur Damien!
This year we have introduced a new class. The traffic laws. In Bukavu, not many are trained for use of the road. In fact, we have no roads. Most of our roads are muddy. And those that are covered with asphalt are just a few. They were rebuilt for the last time before the “Independence in 1960”! More than 58 years have passed since the Independence.
One would find it very absurd to teach our kids about local traffic codes. However, to us at FHA, it is about bringing hope back. Also, we can see in other provinces in our country that the LORD is raising leaders that are caring and willing to improve our situation. In Goma, for example, the Governor is really doing a tremendous job. We believe that GOD will raise a Nehemiah in Bukavu as well, and we want our kids to be ready for it when it happens!
We do not have many cyclists because it is not safe to cycle in our streets. Most of our children have never had a chance to ride a bike. So, right now, they can only identify with the pedestrians. However, they were all excited to learn about the code to be observed by all the road users.

Support VBS 2018 and you can help transform the life of a child in Bukavu through the love of Christ.
For His Grace and Glory,
We thank GOD for the local support that we have been seeing in the last few weeks from local FHA friends here in Bukavu who believe in what we are doing.
Pray with us:
- as we continue preparing for our annual Vacation Bible School (July 30th through August 10th)
- for the Focus Business School course we just started with a fresh group of adult students – our 5th class of future entrepreneurs
- our four summer classes; for the children whom we are educating and for the teachers to gain strength and patience
- that our VBS will have the highest impact on the helpers as well as on the students
- the VBS fundraising that is continuing
